by the author of Read Thai in a Day Here are some of the words we've covered so far in our "stick figure" lessons.
What's the greatest difficulty you have in communicating in any language? It's having the vocabulary with which to express yourself and understand what people are saying! Note. This course focuses mostly on developing a useful vocabulary for getting around, asking directions and buying things. The grammar and language instruction will be minimal. It is designed to complement a more comprehensive Thai language course. You will gain a fundamental grounding in how to speak and understand Thai, and thinking tools and strategies for learning Thai effectively on your own. However, after this course, you should learn to read and then find a Thai language teacher who will help you to read and understand the subtleties of Thai. You should practice speaking and listening with your Thai friends and colleagues.
You will find yourself communicating in basic Thai within a few weeks, without the need to memorize anything! Our brains are designed to remember images instantly. Think about a recent book you read. Can you remember the actual words used to tell the story? Now think of a movie you watched recently. You can probably recall most of the scenarios in vivid detail - after watching it only once. In these fun and friendly workshops, we will draw pictures and tell stories for all the most common words you will need for speaking "Taxi Thai" - getting around, asking for directions, buying things... You will learn how to say late, left, with, put in, put on and sand just by using the word "sigh"! And you will also learn how a "cow" is white, enter, rice, news, knee, stench and he/she/they. You don't need to be an artist (although it helps). Stick figures will do!

About the instructor
How is it that a foreigner (who isn't fluent in Thai himself yet!) can lead a Thai language course? Well, Gary is a specialist in Accelerated Learning techniques, Applied Thinking and practical approaches to Lifelong Learning. As adults, we have a tremendous advantage over children, because we know so much more and can think abstractly. This means we can simplify and think strategically when it comes to learning a new skill. And as a foreigner, like you, he understands what the particular difficulties we have in learning Thai. Something that even experienced Thai teachers cannot comprehend. It is still important to work with experienced Thai teachers when you get to a more advanced level, but Gary will show you how to take what you already know in your own language and culture and use that as a basis for developing your knowledge and understanding of Thai. |
