Using an approach based on quirky visual associations and bizarre (and obscene!), shocking stories, and dispensing with political & linguistic correctness, you will learn to read Thai accurately (but without necessarily understanding at this stage). Nevertheless, by the end of the workshop you will have memorized around 500 key words (300 of which are derived from English) as a side effect.

And you will be able to read and understand the above text! (Not to mention reading it aloud with the correct tones.) You'll already be able to do this on Sunday morning, and we will spend the rest of the day consolidating what you learned the day before by reading progressively more complex short stories. (The other texts that we will be working on - and which you will also be able to read & understand - are reproduced below.)

The "surfing" tone marker
Boys and girls are sporty and so can surf down the wave with ease (yeah!). This is the falling or emphatic tone, as in "yeah!"
Ladyboys are clumsy and get thrown up in the air by the wave. The high-rising or skeptical tone, as in "really?"

Most people give up on Thai because it seems so difficult. Not so! Thai is relatively easy to learn (much fewer words than other major languages, a very simple grammar, fairly consistent, etc.). And even the tones are not as alien as you would expect. English uses the same tones as Thai, just for different purposes (e.g., the rising tone is the same as when we ask a question: "is it mine?", "is it sohng?").

If you have lived (or intend to live) in Thailand for more than a year then you should learn some Thai. This is the fastest and easiest way to get started. I only give this workshop twice a year.
